Third Place Books and Third Place Commons

It was neither hubris nor charity that prompted Ron Sher to open an independent book store in the late 1990's, when Amazon.com was first beginning to turn a profit. Instead it was the understanding that a bookstore sells more than printed words on paper-- bookstores are full of wonderful ideas, casual interactions and a sense of curiosity about the world. The chef looking to perfect her duck confit, a college student prepping for a job interview and traveler looking for a cheap place to stay in Taiwan all rub elbows in the aisles of Third Place Books. Whether you're passing the time, exploring new grounds or catching up on summer beach reading, bookstores are a great place to hang out. The only thing better than a bookstore would be a particularly friendly bookstore with a 10,000 SF commons attached, where you are encouraged to linger as long as you like. That is what Third Place Books is all about.

As the industry faced challenges of new media, increased competition for time, and declining sales, Third Place Books has delivered what people really crave, a chance to meet their neighbors, discuss ideas in an open forum, and build networks of active, engaged citizens. By fostering a vibrant civic life, Third Place Books has transformed the Lake Forest Park Towne Centre from a dying mall to a community treasure and destination for the surrounding neighborhoods.
